Advantages:

• It is not necessary to divide the area of ​​the column into the active area (bubbling area) and the lower one. The vapor and liquid occupy the required section which is determined by volumes and pressure drop.
• In the vacuum system, the steel ring is preferred due to its lower pressure drop.
• The main feature of the steel ring has a much lower pressure drop than the trays.
• The efficiency is fairly constant over the entire operating range.

Disadvantages:

• A packed bed always requires optimal distribution of liquids and gases, trays are much less sensitive at this point.
• In fouling services, the packing may become clogged and difficult to clean. In case of necessity to replace the packaging which implies a considerable cost.
• In the event that the tower casing requires inspection, the only possibility is to remove the packaging.
